Travelling woke me up. Growing up in one place in a particular culture encouraged me to mistake habits of thought for truths. But as I travelled, I began to realize that the instinctive way I lived didn’t work anymore, because the unconscious rationale that I relied upon was relevant only to the particular circumstances of my home. As a result I had to learn – and still am learning – to replace judgement with attention, and thereby habit with knowledge. For me then, travelling is not about where to go, or who to meet, but how to live.

When I landed in Mexico, I had no real idea what to expect. I figured that I would learn some Spanish, and meet a few people. I also expected to be a little homesick. The trip went way beyond my expectations. After a year, I was fluent in Spanish, had made some lifelong friends and memories, and was even singing with a band! I didn’t want to come home! Studying in a different country is not only a rewarding experience – it can change your life. Several years, and 19 countries later, I’m constantly seeking new adventures. Up next: Turkey!

Almost two years ago, I decided to study abroad. I came to Canada to do my Pos-Graduate Certificate in International Business Management. During this year I made new friends, learned a new culture and gained knowledge that complemented my career. Now, I have friends everywhere in the world. I visited many places such as Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lakes, and Montreal. It was memorable! It was a great experience to live the Canadian way. It really made a difference in my life.

I was 16 when I first went abroad. It was the first time being away from my parents and friends for longer than a week. I was scared of leaving everything I knew and going to a country where I didn’t know a soul and couldn’t speak their language. Facing my fears helped me through that first year. After that, I went back home wishing to travel more. I wanted to keep experiencing, learning, and seeing new cultures, languages and people. Since then, I have been on 4 different exchange programs that have changed who I am. They have helped me shape my views, open my mind, and learn to discover a whole new world in front of me.
