Travelling woke me up. Growing up in one place in a particular culture encouraged me to mistake habits of thought for truths. But as I travelled, I began to realize that the instinctive way I lived didn’t work anymore, because the unconscious rationale that I relied upon was relevant only to the particular circumstances of my home. As a result I had to learn – and still am learning – to replace judgement with attention, and thereby habit with knowledge. For me then, travelling is not about where to go, or who to meet, but how to live.
