Who needs a visa?

International Students

If you are an international student coming to Canada, you will need a student visa for the duration of your studies. Check with the Canadian embassy or consulate in your country to find out what requirements there are to apply for a visa.

Visitors

If your friends or family are coming to visit you while you are in Canada, you should check if they need a Temporary Resident visa for the duration of their stay.

Temporary Resident visa requirements are different, depending on your country of origin. If you are travelling to Canada from one of the following countries, you may enter Canada for up to 6 months without a visa (exact length depends on the immigration officer):

Andorra, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Brunei, Cayman Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Falkland Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel (National Passport holders only), Italy, Japan, Korea (Republic of), Latvia (Republic of), Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montserrat, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn, Poland, Portugal, St. Helena, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Solomon Islands, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Slovenia, Switzerland, the Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, United States, and Western Samoa.

Visitors from other countries need to request a visa before leaving their home country. You can find information about the visa requirements and restrictions for your country by visiting the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website or contacting the Canadian embassy or consulate in your area.
